Duckhead Renovation
Inspiration board
This is the existing house, built in 1996. The goal of the renovation is to modernize the house while keeping its character and charm. We would like to update the interior and exterior to maximmize the lake views and create a more open and airy feel, while also adding some modern touches to the design. We want to create a space that is both functional and beautiful, and that will be a joy to live in for years to come.

To avoid (things we don’t like)
Here are some photos of things we don’t like and want to avoid in our renovation. These include: - Angular industrial style and shiny surfaces. - Lack of crown moulding and trim.

We don’t want to sacrifice aesthetics for functionality, but we also don’t want to go too far in the other direction and end up with a house that looks like it’s stuck in the past. We want to find a balance between modern and traditional design elements that will create a timeless look for our home.

We’re looking for natural materials, warm colors, and a cozy atmosphere. We want our home to feel inviting and comfortable, not cold and sterile. We also want to avoid anything that looks too trendy or faddish, as we want our home to have a timeless appeal.

Garage
The garage should look clean and organized, with plenty of storage space for tools and equipment. We want to avoid a cluttered and messy garage.

Indoor - Dining
We want to repurpose our sunroom into our all season dining room. We want to create a space that is bright and airy, with plenty of natural light, so we can enjoy the lake views and garden year round.
A round table hosting 10 guests would be ideal.
Windows should maximize the views. Door should be able to open fully to the patio for indoor/outdoor dining.

Indoor - Family
The lake views are a key feature of our home, so we want to make sure that the Family Room takes full advantage of them. We want to create a space that feels open and airy, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light and provide stunning views of the lake.
The Family Room will be the place where we will gather for movie nights, so the TV will be an important feature of the room. We want to make sure that the TV is integrated into the design of the room, so it doesn’t feel like an afterthought. The TV shouldn’t sit too high above the fireplace. The sound system should be discreetly integrated into the design of the room, so it doesn’t detract from the overall aesthetic. But the picture and sound quality should be top-notch.
The fireplace is another focal point of the Family Room, and we want a timeless design that will complement the overall aesthetic of the room. It should be framed by beautiful built-in shelves that can be used to display books, family photos, and other decorative items. Below doors will allow for hidden storage of media equipment and other items, keeping the space tidy and organized.
For the floor, natural wood flooring will be the perfect choice to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. We want to avoid anything that looks too modern or industrial, and instead opt for a classic and timeless look that will never go out of style.
This photo illustrates the color tones that we’re after for the Family Room, with warm wood tones, soft neutral colors, and plenty of natural light. With ample plants.

The top shelves of the built-ins should be framed with an arch.

Indoor - Mudroom
The mudroom should provide ample space for storing shoes, coats, backpacks, sports gear for a family of five. Ideally all of these items would be out of sight behind close doors, to keep the space looking tidy and organized. There is should be sitting so multiple people can put on and take off their shoes at the same time.

Outdoor - Driveway

Outdoor - Pool
Pool should be a rectangular swim pool, with enough depth to swim. It could be raised to minimize the number of steps down from the patio.

Fencing should be discreet and not obstruct the views of the lake. If the fence can’t be made far enough from the pool and hidden by plants, then a glass fence would be considered.

We would want to keep it simple and elegant. no need for a pool house, fire pit, outdoor kitchen or jacuzzi. The terrace should be generous enough to accomodate lounging chairs and dining. And should be shaded.
Preference for non slip surfaces that stay cool to the sun. Preferrably natural materials like stone instead of concrete or pavers.

We like this mood: painted white bricks, natural stone patio that leads to a pool, surrounded by lush vegetation and shaded by trees. The overall vibe is serene and inviting, with a touch of rustic charm.
